Open-source licences

Last updated October 28, 2026

Soomi is built on open-source software. This page lists the open-source components that run the Soomi services you use, the licence each is offered under, and where to get its source code. We run the upstream releases of these components. Aside from configuration, themes (including our own wording for some menus in the document editor and the calendar), and installed apps and plugins, we make three changes to their source code, each published with its source: in Nextcloud Forms, “Create XLSX” is the highlighted button (https://codeberg.org/soomi/forms_xlsx_primary); in Nextcloud Talk, guests of a public calendar meeting receive one invitation instead of two (https://codeberg.org/soomi/talk_event_invite); and in Nextcloud’s event-update emails, a location that did not change is no longer shown crossed out (https://codeberg.org/soomi/dav_imip_location). Questions: opensource@soomi.ca.

Our own open-source code

We wrote two small Nextcloud apps. Soomi Mail Links (soomi_mailto) keeps a click on an email address inside Soomi; its source code is published at https://codeberg.org/soomi/soomi_mailto. Soomi Invitation Sender (soomi_invite_sender) sends calendar invitations from the organizer's own email address; its source code is published at https://codeberg.org/soomi/soomi_invite_sender. Both are licensed under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0 or later.

The Soomi portal and website

Our portal and website are our own software. They include third-party JavaScript packages under permissive licences (MIT, Apache-2.0, ISC, BSD and 0BSD), an image library under LGPL-3.0 that runs only on our servers, and browser-compatibility data under CC BY 4.0. The full list of packages and their licences is available on request at opensource@soomi.ca.

Getting the source code

For components under the GNU GPL, LGPL or AGPL, the source code for the versions we run is available at the links above; our changes to Nextcloud Forms, Nextcloud Talk and Nextcloud server are at https://codeberg.org/soomi/forms_xlsx_primary, https://codeberg.org/soomi/talk_event_invite and https://codeberg.org/soomi/dav_imip_location. The source code of our own open-source apps is at https://codeberg.org/soomi/soomi_mailto and https://codeberg.org/soomi/soomi_invite_sender. For anything else, write to opensource@soomi.ca.
